How much does it cost to build a garage?

A new garage can cost between £500 and several thousand pounds, depending on the construction, size and type of building.

Garages offer secure protection for your car all year round. They keep your car protected from the worst of the British weather as well as helping you reduce your motor insurance premiums. And, garages are a popular way to add value to your home.

A recent study from the bank Santander found that that just over half of privately owned homes in the UK have a garage, equating to 9.3 million private garages in Britain. And, the latest survey from Spicerhaart, an independent network of estate agents, revealed that parking and garage spaces are the number one request from prospective house buyers.

When considering building a new garage, you need to make sure that it is big enough for your needs. You need space for at least one car and some additional room for movement. You then need to decide what type of garage you want.

A simple wooden carport that attaches to the side of your home can come in at under £500. A self-assembly wooden or metal garage can cost between £1,000 and £2,000 whilst you may pay several thousand pounds if you require a bespoke garage to be built – either freestanding or attached to your home with a room above. A two storey extension of this nature can also offer you additional living space but may cost in excess of £20,000.

As well as the garage itself, you can pay several hundreds of pounds for optional extras such as electric garage doors or reinforced windows. You may also need planning permission to carry out the work, depending on the size and location of the new garage.

Whilst there can be a significant cost to build a garage, a garage can also add substantial value to your home. The website upmystreet.co.uk says that adding a single garage to your property can help increase value by around 5 per cent, or more in urban areas.
